Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was raised by her mother, grandmother and godparents. In her childhood, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford started acting in her teens and became part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one month, she decided that it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. During the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
